The ASM Odyssey of the Mind team won first place at the regional competition in Columbia on March 18th, but it wasn't any easy road to victory. The 7 student team has been working on their problem since the fall, creating scripts, props, songs, and inventions to answer the problem their team chose to solve. It took many after school meetings and dedication from all of the team members to prepare for the competition.
On Friday, March 17th, they traveled to Columbia, SC to present their problem and compete against teams from across the state. But the night before the big competition, tragedy struck.
The trailer that held all of the students handmade props was stolen from their hotel parking lot. The theft was discovered just hours before students were set to compete the next day.
The students were faced with three options: drop out of the competition completely, perform with no props, or put something together in just 2 hours.
They got right to work. By the time it was their turn to present, our fearless OMers had replicated the important aspects of their set and were ready to set their exhaustion aside and perform. They came through with a first place win and an invitation to the International Odyssey of the Mind competition in May. Here at ASM, we couldn't be more proud of our students! Their dedication and perseverance in the face of adversity are just the qualities we want to build in all of our students.
