About 8th Grade Math (Pre-algebra)

About the Curriculum: Glencoe
Glencoe is the main curriculum used in this course. This year you are in course 3 or pre-algebra. Glencoe is rigorous, highly engaging, and student-centered. Glencoe courses do the following:

  • Allow students to practice applying mathematical ways of thinking to real-world issues and challenges.
  • Require students to develop a depth of understanding and ability to apply mathematics to novel situations – as college students and employees regularly are called to do.
  • Emphasize mathematical modeling and reasoning

Course 3 Units
In course, we will cover the following units:

  • Chapter 1: The Number System
  • Chapter 2: Equations & Expressions
  • Chapter 3: Geometry
  • Chapter 4: Functions
  • Chapter 5: Data Analysis & Statistics

Yearly Testing
MAP testing will happen in the fall, winter, and spring. SC Ready testing will be in the spring as well.

Grades are weighted the same across all math courses at ASM.

Tests, quizzes, assessments, & projects: 60%
            Classwork: 30%
            Homework: 10%

 Homework & Classwork Policy
I typically assign homework every weekday except Fridays and on test days. I check homework for completeness and work shown, not correctness. I use a 4 point scale when checking homework. Therefore, if I assigned 12 problems and you completed 9 of them your score would be a 3 out of 4. I accept late homework within 3 days for half-credit if it is fully complete. If you are absent you may make up classwork. When you are absent you are responsible for making up all missed work within 5 days for full credit.

Each day students will need your Glencoe book, pencils, and a notebook or notebook paper. I will provide calculators for activities that require one.
